Miller Brands working in our local community

Supporting Woking Hospice

As a proud member of the local Surrey community Miller Brands, is pleased to support Woking Hospice. Working with its customers and staff the company has built a close working relationship with the Hospice in order to help keep the Hospice doors open.

Above financial support Miller Brands has also organised for unused office furniture to be donated to the hospice furniture shop in Knaphill as well as offering a raffle prize of a trip for two to visit the famous brewery in Plzen, Czech Republic - where the premium beer Pilsner Urquell hails from. The prize was raffled off at the Hospice’s annual Dove Ball in November at Wentworth Golf Club.

We are proud to support the work of Woking Hospice on an ongoing basis and look forward to finding new ways of helping in the future.

Woking Hospices is a registered charity providing specialist palliative care, advice and support for people with life limiting and terminal illnesses in Surrey. This vital service costs in excess of £2.6 million per year to run and the Hospice is dependant on the community it serves to fund this essential work.

All services and facilities are provided free of charge and include in patient medical care and counselling services.

The Hospice receives minimal contributions from the NHS, and the majority of funding comes from donations, fundraising activities and retail shops. To visit the Hospice website please click here.

Book Drive for Woking Hospice

During the month of March Miller Brands employees were asked to purge their bookshelves of unwanted or un-needed books so they might be donated to the local hospice charity shop.

Miller Brands employees brought in old (and some new!) books that they didn’t want and that were still in good condition.  By the end of March a corner of the office was piled high with stacks of books.

In total 90 employees donated 157 books - and these now extend the collection of great books in the Woking Hospice charity shops. The shops provide a valuable income for the Hospice, which does not charge for the valuable services it offers to the local community.

Employee volunteering

Miller Brands engages with its local community in a variety of ways. One example of this is through employee volunteering. Previous initiatives have included staff from Miller Brands joining forces with the Surrey Care Trust’s Swingbridge Community Boat for a spruce up of the Basingstoke Canal.

Together they spent an afternoon working along a stretch through Woking town centre, pulling fallen trees out of the water, cutting back and pulling out vegetation from the canal and towpath and clearing several bags of litter.

Swingbridge is a training base for people to develop new skills in environmental work and in the process they make a major contribution to preserving and enhancing public open spaces, such as the Basingstoke Canal and its environs.

Even on days when the boat isn’t being used for training, the environmental work often carries on, thanks to the Surrey Care Trust’s many Swingbridge volunteers, including staff from local companies such as Miller Brands who want to make a contribution to the local community and environment.

The Surrey Care Trust is a charity helping local people with limited skills to transform their chances in life through innovative education and training. The Trust also has a Crisis Grants fund, giving immediate help across Surrey to people facing hardship. To visit the Surrey Care Trust website please click here.
