The Mill, created by Miller Genuine Draft, will mark a year of supporting Scotland’s emerging music scene with two landmark gigs taking place in Glasgow on Thursday 27th August and in Edinburgh on Thursday 3rd September 2009.
The Mill welcomes back four crowd favourites from the last year. We Were Promised Jetpacks and Broken Records will take to the stage in Glasgow, and The Ads and Found will play Edinburgh, with a DJ set from new music hero Jim Gellatly will end each evening!
In keeping with the ethos of The Mill, which is quickly becoming known as one of the best platforms for up and coming musical talent, each act has handpicked a hotly tipped emerging band whom they’d like to see receive the support offered by an appearance on-stage at The Mill.
Broken Records are championing Sparrow & the Workshop, We Were Promised Jetpacks introduce Some Young Pedro, whilst Found bring Come In Tokyo and The Ads bring forth The Ok Social Club.
Yvonne Lamb, Miller Genuine Draft Brand Manager says, “We’re delighted ‘A year of The Mill’ has attracted back such a high calibre of alumni. What’s more, in the true spirit of The Mill, these bands are helping us further showcase the best in emerging Scottish music by bringing their own pick of emerging bands.”
“The Mill provides free live music every Thursday, giving new bands professionally produced video and audio tracks of the songs they perform on the night – real, tangible assets which they can then use to help them take the next step in their music careers.
On top of the assets received, ‘A year of the Mill’ provides emerging bands with the chance to play alongside more established artists, amplifying the support they receive. It’s all set to be a cracking night for everyone.”
In a final exciting addition, during Jim Gellatly’s DJ set Tony Doogan (Belle & Sebastian, The Delgados) will produce a limited edition CD of live recordings from the gig as an exclusive giveaway to all ticket holders on the night. This CD is set to be a true collector’s item.

Performing artists - We Were Promised Jetpacks with Some Young Pedro and Broken Records with Sparrow and the Workshop.
Since their last appearance at the Mill in September 2008, Glasgow based We Were Promised Jetpacks have played some of 2009’s major festivals including the Wickerman Festival. The 15th June saw the UK release of their critically acclaimed debut album "These Four Walls" with FatCat Records. This will be their last UK gig before heading off on a world tour supporting Frightened Rabbit, which takes in Holland, Amsterdam and the US, among other places.
Unsigned act Some Young Pedro, originate from Lauder and St Boswells, and the three members have known each other since High School. After moving to Glasgow and Edinburgh in 2006, the band released their debut album on their own label. Now working with Producer Steven Ward (Franz Ferdinand, 1990s and Errors) two interesting facts about the band are that Drummer Alasdair Reid's Uncle is in The Rezillos, and a band member from Metallica has been to see them play!
Broken Records, the 7-piece Edinburgh band have had an incredibly busy time since playing at both The Mill Glasgow and The Mill Edinburgh in February 2009, making appearances at Glastonbury, Oxegen in Ireland and the Latitude Festival to name but a few. After signing with the prestigious 4AD label, in January 2009 the band recorded their debut album “Until the Earth Begins to Part” at the infamous Monnow Valley studio in Wales with producer Ian Caple (The Manic Street Preachers and Stevie Wonder among others). The album was released in the UK in June this year, and in the US on July 7th.
Sparrow and the Workshop is a Scottish/Welsh/American 3-piece from Glasgow, formed in the dew of January 2008. They play a stripped-down drum kit, a crash box, a very white bass, a smallish acoustic guitar, a mellow yellow electric slide guitar and occasionally an old French violin alongside boy/girl vocal duets. Sparrow and the Workshop signed to Distiller Records for the forthcoming UK release of their debut EP and Single.

Performing artists - The Ads with The Ok Social Club and Found with Come In Tokyo.
Since playing The Mill Edinburgh in October 2008 and The Mill Glasgow in February 2009 The Ads have grown massively over the past year with a new sound that saw them moving forward to support The Futureheads, All American Rejects and most recently Snow Patrol's huge sell-out gigs at the SECC, before winning a publishing deal with music management legends Big Life (who also manage La Roux, The Verve and Badly Drawn Boy among others).
Edinburgh based four-piece The Ok Social Club were described by NME as having "a fine line in maximum rock and roll, enough hooks to hang tonight's huge curtains on and anthems that burrow into the brain." The band is currently unsigned, although in May they put out a limited edition EP with Avalanche Records.
Edinburgh based ‘experimental collective pop band’ Found first played The Mill Edinburgh in October 2008. Now signed with King Creosote's label Fence Records, the band have a prolific output with two full length albums and six singles/EPs in the last two years. The band follows an almost Kraftwerk-ian method of recording – where songs are treated like scientific art experiments earning them an impressive amount of national radio play including support from Radio 1 DJs Steve Lamaq, Rob Da Bank, Huw Stevens and Vic Galloway. They’ve also recorded radio sessions for Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio Scotland and Radio Magnetic as well as appearing on MTV Europe and BBC Scotland. They specialise in pulling sounds from their every day surroundings, cutting and pasting them into songs. Found also recently appeared at SXSW in association with the Scottish Arts Council and on August 5th launch the Cybraphon, their latest art installation!
Also signed to the infamous Fife based label Fence Records and fresh from touring the UK with The Aliens, Edinburgh’s Come In Tokyo make punk/ rock ‘n’ roll at its finest. Well known for their electric live shows, which combine an unrivalled enthusiasm and synergy, they are surprisingly loud too. Especially, considering there is only two people in the band. A live act, not to be missed, they are currently recording their debut album for the label, due to be released later in the year.
As usual, The Mill Manager Keren McKean will be working with the renowned Tony Doogan to produce recordings and videos. The artists retain rights for them, giveing every performer a host of genuinely different assets to help them develop on their way.
