Tyskie in Pole Position for Euro 2008

With Euro 2008 drawing near, the question on everyone’s lips is ‘who will we support during the tournament’? For one set of fans the answer is very simple.  Poland of course, and who better to help support them than one of the country’s most popular beers, Tyskie.

An extremely patriotic bunch, the Poles, unlike most other world travellers, like to keep their feet in the country of their birth so to speak and make a point of buying products from their homeland.  Which is why Tyskie has bought a little bit (or a big bit perhaps!) of Poland to the UK.

Poland, like England, is a football crazy nation and as such, has captured thousands of signatures across 18 Polish cities on a flag that will measure some 53 feet!   The next stop for fans to register their support takes place at “The Great Flag Event” in London’s Potters Fields Park (near Tower Bridge) on the South Bank on Thursday 15th May from 10am – 8pm.

The flag, which will be made up from a patchwork of supporter’s signatures will be joined to create a monster token of support to be presented to the national team at their friendly match with Denmark on 1st June prior to their departure to the tournament.

But it doesn’t end there.  The very same section of flag will be paying a visit to two trade outlets before being shipped back to Poland to join the final flag.

On Friday 16th May, the flag’s first stop is at HT & Co (Drinks) Ltd, formerly known as Hothi Cash and Carry, in Park Royal, London.  Its last and final destination in the UK will be The Belvedere in Acton, a Polish pub which is owned by the Town & City Pub Company, where customers will be able to participate in making history by signing the flag.  The Great Flag Events are open to over 18s only.

Anthony Holme, Business Development Manager from Miller Brands said; “As Tyskie are the sponsors of the Polish National Team we want to help the Polish celebrate their place in the tournament.  Our ‘Cheer for Poland’ campaign encompasses the on and off trade as well as cash and carry and we’re hoping people will get right behind it.

“We’re going to be creating a visual showcase across the sectors using point of sale material including bunting, flags, posters and window sticker’s; consumer promotions which include giveaways of replica footballs shirts and flags; and awe-inspiring displays in outlets and decorating bars across London.”

The Polish have a history of creating spectacular iconic displays of their dedication to their football team. In 2006 the national monuments across nine cites were adorned with the national colours of the team, red and white. A million flags were hung from the windows of the highest tower blocks to the smallest of lodgings. Where in the UK we see flags galore in cars, the Poles went one step further by hanging their flags on buses, trains and trams!

Tyskie is one of two Polish beers marketed, distributed and sold by Miller Brands (UK) Ltd.  It is one of the most popular lagers for the UK’s fast growing Polish population and it is the biggest beer brand in Poland with a 16.1% share of the market.

The Polish community has continued to grow in the UK and with that has come a desire for all things Polish.  According to research conducted by Research International on behalf of Miller Brands, there are currently over 1.5 million Poles living and working in the UK, with 400,000 Poles in London.
