Only two weeks into the job and new Mayor Boris has already made his mark…..on a flag that has attracted thousands of signatures from the diverse communities that make up London, in support of the Polish national football team.
On the doorstep of London’s City Hall and Tower Bridge, Tyskie, Poland’s best-selling beer, hosted the Great Flag Event: where Londoners were invited to sign a 10 x10 ft section of a flag that will go on to make up the biggest supporter’s symbol at Euro 2008 – measuring a gigantic 1,600 sq ft!
The Tyskie-sponsored event on Thursday 15th May attracted good luck messages from people representing over 18 different nationalities that are part of London’s cosmopolitan population.
In Poland, sections of the flag will be travelling across 18 cities, in the hope of attracting hundreds of thousands of signatures, which will then be brought together to create a huge token of support to be presented to the national team at their friendly match with Denmark on 1st June, prior to their departure to the tournament.
The Polish have a history of creating spectacular iconic displays of their dedication to their national team. Earlier this year the national monuments across nine cites were adorned with the red and white colours of the team; while in 2006 over one million supporter flags were hung across Poland: from the windows of the highest tower blocks to the smallest of lodgings. Having the Mayor of London’s signature of support is sure to help the flag achieve iconic status with the sport-crazy nation many of whom are proud to call London their second home.
The final stop for the flag in the UK will be hosted by Tyskie this evening at The Belvedere in Acton where customers will be invited to take their place in history by adding their signatures to the flag!
The Tyskie team will also be visiting 10 Polish pubs across the capital to help Londoners support the team in their Euro 2008 Group matches against Germany, Croatia and Austria. Selected bars will be dressed in the red and white colours of the team and Tyskie will be giving away a limited number of replica football shirts and flags.
