A day with the Finance team

Our finance department is focused on supporting the commercial side of the business and recording and managing the company accounts. We try to add value through our work rather than just crunching numbers and we’re always seeking new and innovative things to do and enhanced ways of working.

Morning

getting breakfast

When I arrive in the morning the first thing I do is run down to the canteen to beat the queue. Some cereal always gets me on the go! I’ll then have a check of my diary to see what the day has in store. I’m lucky as my role  is quite diverse so every day is different. One day I might be getting to the  bottom of an accounting issue, another day I’ll be supporting the sales team with their upcoming negotiations.

Mid Morning

meeting
One of my essential tasks is supporting the sales team to make sure we provide relevant financial data for sales negotiations. We look at a range of scenarios and build all sort of models. The workload is shared amongst the team and my job is to coordinate the process. When I started 3 years ago I was alone and I get a lot of satisfaction from how the team has developed over the years.

Lunch

playing table tennis

The finance team usually all eat together and we’ll often talk about what each of us has been up to of late or sometimes I just grab a sandwich and head off to play a quick table tennis match – and hopefully win!  It helps to clear my mind of work for a short period of time and refreshes me for afternoon meetings.

Afternoon

meeting with colleagues
I also lead a pricing project that involves cross functional input. We are often having meetings to ensure we have all the input we need to take the project forward. I also regularly liaise with the sales and marketing teams. I enjoy these meetings as it’s also an opportunity to give my input to discussions from a non-financial angle.
